Sodium laureth sulphate is a surfactant. That is a substance that can reduce the surface tension of a liquid and thus allow it to foam or penetrate solids. It is also an industrial grade detergent, or degreaser. Like all detergents sodium laureth sulphate attacks grease, thereby helping to clean the skin. However, the human skin is a complex organ and contains glands which deliberately secrete grease or oil onto the skin to help keep it waterproof, supple and, to quote, "soft and smooth." Sodium laureth sulphate strips the natural oil from the skin leaving it rough and dry. That's not all sodium laureth sulphate does. Sodium laureth sulphate is a powerful detergent, garages use it to clean engine oil from their floors, it is also very corrosive. Perhaps that is why my bubble bath advises me to "avoid getting into eyes," well maybe. Or perhaps it's because sodium laureth sulphate attacks the formation of essential proteins in the the eyes leading to cataracts in adults and preventing children's eyes from forming properly. Further investigation reveals that sodium laureth sulphate is so harmful to the skin that it is used in medical laboratories to damage the skin before healing agents can be tested!

...

Research in America at the Georgia University medical centre indicates that sodium laureth sulphate and sodium lauryl sulphate can both react with other chemicals found in cosmetics to form nitrosamines and 1,4 dioxine, which are both known carcinogens. For this reason the American Food and Drug Agency classifies both sodium laureth sulphate and sodium lauryl sulphate as drugs when used in cosmetics.

Kitas straipsnis raminantis: SLS dirgina odą, bet nesukelia vėžio ar bla bla bla:

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate & Sodium Laureth Sulfate

Are sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and sodium laureth sulfate (SLES) serious problems in cosmetics? I have received more e-mails and letters than I care to count about this concern. I believe that this entire mania was generated by several Neways Web sites, and has been carried over as if it were fact into other so-called "all natural" cosmetics lines.

It seems that most of this issue is based on the incorrect reporting about a study at the Medical College of Georgia. As a reminder, here is what is being quoted: "A study from the Medical College of Georgia indicates that SLS is a systemic, and can penetrate and be retained in the eye, brain, heart, liver, etc., with potentially harmful long-term effects. It could retard healing and cause cataracts in adults, and can keep children's eyes from developing properly." This is supposedly quoted from a report given to the Research to Prevent Blindness conference. While the report on animal models extrapolates concerns about the use SLS, it draws no hard conclusions stating that the amount of SLS used was 10% greater then that used in shampoos and done on animals not people. The doctor who conducted the study and delivered the final report is Dr. Keith Green, Regents Professor of Ophthalmology at the Medical College of Georgia, who received his doctorate of science from St. Andrews University in Scotland. I had an opportunity to talk with Dr. Green who stated that he was completely embarrassed by all this. He told me in a telephone interview back in 1997 that his "work was completely misquoted. There is no part of my study that indicated any [eye] development or cataract problems from SLS or SLES and the body does not retain those ingredients at all. We did not even look at the issue of children, so that conclusion is completely false because it never existed. The Neways people took my research completely out of context and probably never read the study at all." He continued in a perturbed voice, saying, "The statement like ‘SLS is a systemic' has no meaning. No ingredient can be a systemic unless you drink the stuff and that's not what we did with it. Another incredible comment was that my study was ‘clinical,' meaning I tested the substance on people, [but] these were strictly animal tests. Furthermore, the eyes showed no irritation with the 10-dilution substance used! If anything, the animal studies indicated no risk of irritation whatsoever!" That lack of outcome is in fact why, as of 1987, Green no longer pursued this research. When I asked if anyone has done any follow-up studies looking at SLS and SLES in this regard, Dr. Green said, "No one has done this because the findings were so insignificant."

Resulting mass emails continued for some time, carrying on the SLS and SLES myth with a slightly different bent. Yet, according to Health Canada, in a press release, February 12, 1999 (http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/), "A letter has been circulating the Internet which claims that there is a link between cancer and sodium laureth (or lauryl) sulphate (SLS), an ingredient used in [cosmetics]. Health Canada has looked into the matter and has found no scientific evidence to suggest that SLS causes cancer. It has a history of safe use in Canada. Upon further investigation, it was discovered that this email warning is a hoax. The letter is signed by a person at the University of Pennsylvania Health System and includes a phone number. Health Canada contacted the University of Pennsylvania Health System and found that it is not the author of the sodium laureth sulphate warning and does not endorse any link between SLS and cancer. Health Canada considers SLS safe for use in cosmetics. Therefore, you can continue to use cosmetics containing SLS without worry."

Further, according to the American Cancer Society's Web site, "Contrary to popular rumors on the Internet, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) do not cause cancer. Emails have been flying through cyberspace claiming SLS [and SLES] causes cancer … and is proven to cause cancer. ... [Yet] A search of recognized medical journals yielded no published articles relating this substance to cancer in humans."

That's not to say that sodium lauryl sulfate isn't a potent skin irritant, because it is, and it's considered a standing comparison substance for measuring skin irritancy of other ingredients. In scientific studies when they want to establish whether or not an ingredient is problematic for skin, they compare its effect to the results of SLS. In amounts of 2% to 5% it can cause irritating or sensitizing reactions in lots of people (Sources: European Journal of Dermatology, September-October 2001, pages 416-419; American Journal of Contact Dermatitis, March 2001, pages 28–32). But irritancy is not the same as the other dire, erroneous warnings floating around the Web about this ingredient!

Kitas straipsnis:

Sodium Laureth Sulfate
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate

There is a lot of information – and misinformation – in the media about these surfactants. Several internet websites, particularly those concerned with human health and environmental safety, list all of the reasons their products do not contain SLS or SLES. Other sites, such as "urban legends" sites, and specifically those sites that advertise products containing SLS or SLES, claim that all of the information showing SLS and/or SLES to be at least worth further study, if not downright dangerous, is nothing but hype.

SLS/SLES is a detergent, wetting agent, and emulsifier. It is used in about 98% of all "personal care" products as well as other products; hand and body creams, depilatories, bubble baths, hair color kits, shampoos, conditioners, toothpastes, shaving cream, shower gel, facial cleansers, "baby wipes", "soapless" shampoos, and many others.

It is sometimes listed as "coconut oil" or "from coconuts" because it is originally derived from coconuts. However, pure, unprocessed coconut oil is NOT SLS. The American College of Toxicology says that SLS stays in the body up to five days. Other studies show it easily penetrates the skin, and enters and maintains residual levels in the heart, liver, lungs, and even the brain. X6

Cosmetics-industry apologists often claim that the same American College of Toxicology study also reports: "Both Sodium and Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate appear to be safe in formulations designed for discontinuous, brief use followed by thorough rinsing from the surface of the skin. In products intended for prolonged contact with skin, concentrations should not exceed 1%."

Well, yes, it does say that. Please notice the words "discontinuous, brief use followed by thorough rinsing…." – how many of America’s children have a "discontinuous, brief" bubble bath? And "should not exceed 1%" – yet, in a number of shampoos, SLS is the FIRST ingredient listed. It definitely comprises more than 1% in those products.

In addition, since it is in nearly every product used for personal cleaning, any one person taking a shower, shampooing and conditioning hair, using a special cleanser for "sensitive" skin, and brushing teeth, has just absorbed far more than the supposed "safe" amount.

Worse, now some toothpastes containing both SLS and Triclosan are claiming that their toothpastes "continue working" or "stay on the teeth" for up to twelve hours after brushing. That is hardly a "discontinuous, brief use".

Here is a synopsis of what some reports show about Sodium Lauryl and Laureth Sulfate:

*

SLS penetrates eyes and tissues. Tests show that SLS can penetrate into the eyes as well as systemic tissues (brain, heart, liver, etc.) and shows long-term retention is those tissues. There is an immediate concern relating to this eye penetration, especially when used in soaps, shampoos, and bubble baths: Dr. Keith Green, Ph.D., D.Sc., reports that…."Sodium Lauryl Sulfate denatures the proteins of eye tissues, impairing development permanently. Because it is absorbed through the skin, it does not have to enter the eye directly….", And "Sodium Lauryl Sulfate impairs proper structural formation of young eyes and causes permanent eye damage. SLS causes eye irritation, is linked to cataracts, and delays healing of corneal tissue….".x8
*

SLS can form nitrates and nitrosamines (potent carcinogens that cause the body to absorb nitrates at higher levels than even nitrate-contaminated food, such as some hot dog meats or some bacon). Particularly in combination with the DEA, TEA, and MEA (Diethanolamine, Triethanolamine, and Monoethano- lamine, themselves very questionable ingredients) SLS/SLES has been found capable of producing these carcinogens. The FDA is currently studying the problem of the Di-, Mono-, and Tri- ethanolamines and is considering legal options at this time.
*

SLS/SLES can strip moisture and oils from the skin. It is a degreaser as well as a sudsing agent. According to the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, and the above-mentioned J. Am. College of Toxicology report, SLS produces skin and hair damage, including cracking and severe inflammation of the derma-epidermis tissue. The denaturation properties can also separate and inflame skin layers. SLS has a "degenerative effect on the cell membranes" and SLS causes slight to moderate skin irritation in low concentrations, and skin corrosion and severe irritation in high concentrations.x9

SLS/SLES may not "cause" cancer, but definitely can produce carcinogens in combination with other common ingredients. That alone should be enough to initiate further studies. And the questions regarding eye damage, particularly to babies and children, are certainly deserving of more investigation.

Anionic Surfactants: surfactants are used in about 90% of foaming personal care products. They are also used in car washes, garage floor cleaners, and as engine degreasers. Common anionic surfactants include: Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES), Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate (ALS), Ammonium Laureth Sulfate (ALES), Sodium Methyl Cocoyl Taurate, Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate, Sodium Cocoyl Sarcosinate, Potassium Coco Hydrolysed Collagen, TEA (Triethanolamine) Lauryl Sulfate, TEA (Triethanolamine) Laureth Sulfate, Lauryl or Cocoyl Sarcosine, Disodium Oleamide Sulfosuccinate, Disodium Laureth Sulfosuccinate, and Disodium Dioctyl Sulfosuccinate. Avoid all of these ingredients if they are on the label.

Anionic Surfactants

Anionic refers to the negative charge these surfactants have. They may be contaminated with nitrosamines, which are carcinogenic. Surfactants can pose serious health threats. They are used in car washes, as garage floor cleaners and engine degreasers - and in 90% of personal-care products that foam. They are also known as:

* Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)
* Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES)
* Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate (ALS)
* Ammonium Laureth Sulfate (ALES)
* Sodium Methyl Cocoyl Taurate
* Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate
* Sodium Cocoyl Sarcosinate
* Potassium Coco Hydrolysed Collagen
* TEA (Triethanolamine) Lauryl Sulfate
* TEA (Triethanolamine) Laureth Sulfate
* Lauryl or Cocoyl Sarcosine

Harsh detergents

Harsh detergents, particularly the so-called ionic detergents, may be harmful for the skin. They are called ionic because their molecules become charged when dissolved in water. The most common and ubiquitous ionic detergents are sodium lauryl sulfate, sodium laureth sulfate (both acronymed SLS) and their analogs, such as ammonium lauryl sulfate, ammonium laureth sulfate and others. In facts, SLS is often used to produce experimental skin damage in clinical studies of skin protectors. As they are powerful detergents, SLS and analogs are widely used in household and body care products, such as shampoos, soaps, dishwashing liquids, laundry detergents, and so forth. (FYI, even regular soap contains primarily ionic detergents albeit not as strong as SLS).

Read the ingredient on all products that come in contact with your skin. If they contain ionic detergents, eliminate or minimize such contact by using similar products with nonionic detergents, alternative cleansing methods, wearing gloves when washing dishes, etc. For example, if you shampoo or soap has SLS or its analogs, you can switch to non-irritating baby shampoo and glycerin-based moisturizing soap.

Ačiū už informacija Laimi,
aš pasižiūrėjau to Amway šampūno sudėtį http://www.ewg.org/reports/skindeep2/ svetainėje.
